Overall: Roundtables for Sports Teams/League Organization Management and Training

These roundtables are specialized meetings created for the purpose of idea exchange and learning from one another. New and existing organizations have something to learn from one another. Share templates, what works, what doesn't, strategies, management techniques, training, fund raisers, event management, etc.

If you are a board member, owner, manager, or officer of a sports league, team, umbrella, or governing group, these sessions are for you. If you would like to be a part of these round tables, please subscribe to this discussion group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SportsLeadership (even if you can't attend in person, subscribe to this Yahoo! Group anyway to engage in the online sharing of ideas). Being leaders in the sports community, please help us get the word out by including us in your next newsletter and on your website, details here.

These open forums will be completely driven by the attendees, though our two co-chairs (Marc Davino, Executive Director of PrideSportsBoston, Diana Cutaia, NGLAC Women's Director, and Jeffry Pike, Federation of Gay Games Charter and Honorary Lifetime Director) will help drive the process. This is likely the first time many of you will be meeting each other in person, it would be a good idea to get the conversations started before coming such that you'll each know what information would be valuable amongst the participants. You're all in the driver's seat -- we're providing the space and the venue -- go for it! These are working sessions.

Umbrella Multi-Sports Group Roundtable

These combined 1-2 hour working sessions are an open forum for the organizers of umbrella sports groups to have an exchange of ideas and learn from one another. Expect the sharing of advice on successful and unsuccessful strategies for building a successful umbrella athletics group, templates, how to become a non-profit, how to recruit and engage a board, how to provide value-added services to member groups, etc. Some of these sport groups have evolved from groups that were originally put together to bring athletes to the Gay Games, others were setup specifically to leverage resources for local sports teams. Attendees in this session should also plan on attending the Local Sports Team Roundtable. This session is also for those wanting to create such groups in their local area.

International Sports Governing Roundtable

These combined 1-2 hour working sessions are an open forum for the organizers of international/national sports governing groups, usually for a single sport, to have an exchange of ideas and learn from one another. Expect the sharing of advice on successful and unsuccessful strategies for building a successful governing organization, templates, how to become a non-profit, how to recruit and engage a board how to grow and manage more local groups, autonomy of local groups vs. centralize management, etc. These groups define and/or recommend standards to be implemented at the local sports team/league level, as well as hold international/national tournaments. Attendees in this session should also plan on attending the Local Sports Team Roundtable.

Local Sports Team/League Roundtable

These combined 1-2 hour working sessions are an open forum for the organizers of a local team or league to have an exchange of ideas and learn from one another. Expect the sharing of advice on successful and unsuccessful strategies for building a local athletics group/league/team, templates, how to incorporate, how to recruit and engage a board, how to recruit members and give them value, how to work with umbrella/governing sports groups, etc.

SLC topics of potential discussion in each session

  • Cover case studies of participating organizations

  • Formalization of the organization (incorporate or not, pros/cons, tips for mission/goals, by-laws, Board of Directors, committees, etc.)

  • Recruiting members and engaging the community -- creating inclusion, working with mainstream/straight leagues

  • How to manage operationally and fiscally

  • Creating long lasting organizations

  • What are the politics involved? How to work with the government in your city

  • Leveraging the strength of the membership to benefit all groups

  • How to seek financial sponsorship

  • Using the network

  • How to plan events

Also, please help us to help you by promoting the online survey that will show corporate sponsors (you can use this data as well) that they should be allocating funds and chasing gay sporting events since our demographics show we are highly coveted consumers, http://www.gayconference.org/Survey.php?Link=your_group (where you edit "your_group" and as long as you receive 10 or more replies, we can give you a rollup on the anonymous survey results for your members -- so you'll have anonymous demographics for your audience as well as the overall).
