GLAF Facilitates a Breakout
Session at the Sport In Society 14th Annual Human Rights Leadership
ForumMay 10th, 2005 written by Monica VanBuskirk
CAMBRIDGE, MA –
The Gay & Lesbian Athletics Foundation was invited to be a breakout
session facilitator at the May 5th,
14th Annual Human Rights Leadership Forum at Northeastern
University sponsored by
Sport in
Society, of Boston. The forum is to present the annual MVP
Leadership Award to an individual and a High School. Attending were
1000 students from middle school and high schools in the region. The
forum was sponsored by Reebok, Comcast, State Street, Acua Panna, The
Mary Bryon Foundation, and the Massachusetts Department of Social
Services.
GLAF Executive Director, Mac Chinsomboon was the facilitator for
one of the breakout sessions, and he said, “Sport in Society has
supported the GLAF mission from our inception and we are honored to be
a part of this mainstream event for youth, where a majority of the
attendees were likely not LGBT.” Chinsomboon continues, "My breakout
session had about 20 kids, randomly assigned, and I was quite amazed
when I asked them 'How many of you know someone that is gay?' with
about 90% of them raising their hand."
The GLAF breakout session wasn't focused on LGBT in sports, but
rather, took on the stance of "all diversity in sports" and how more
more valuable a learning opportunity that is for everyone. Chinsomboon
says, "I used excerpts from our conference videos that we have
available online, and asked the kids to take out the word 'gay' or
'lesbian' and instead insert the words 'Indian-American' or
'African-American' or 'Hispanic' or 'handicapped', etc." Chinsomboon
continues, "From the quality of Q&A and discussion, I really felt
these kids 'got it'."
As an adjunction to GLAF's mission to continue it's mission to “promote acceptance and visibility of the
Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered (GLBT) athletes in the
professional, amateur, and recreational athletics communities,
including high school and collegiate," GLAF will also continue work on
overall diversity within athletics and sports.
